The Merwida Barbera 2023 displays a beautiful translucent purple hue, typical of this variety which produces lighter-styled red wines. The nose is captivating, offering layered aromas of ripe plum, blackberry, wild strawberry, and nuances of nutmeg, dried herbs, and orange citrus peel. Subtle hints of charcuterie and a whisper of black pepper add complexity and intrigue. On the palate, this Barbera is medium-bodied, staying true to the cultivar’s signature style. It opens with vibrant, lip-smacking cherry fruit, followed by flavours of strawberry compote. The tannins are fine and powdery, delicately framing the wine’s structure, while its pronounced acidity ensures freshness and vitality throughout. The finish is juicy, marked by a rustic charm and a touch of polished finesse, with lingering notes of black pepper adding a savoury edge.
