Merwida’s farms are actively working together to enhance the living conditions and livelihoods of their workers and the communities. Current major projects on the farms include:
Crèche facilities with nursing rooms
Education and skills training
Improved health care.
We are also an accredited member of Fairtrade, a world leading organization developed to help consumers support products that come from farms that have been certified to provide fair wages and safe working conditions. In addition, farm workers on certified farms are paid a premium from Fairtrade to apply to projects such as healthcare, women’s leadership initiatives and socio-economic programs, as voted for by the workers themselves. Such premiums received from Fairtrade contributed significantly to the construction of a community centre on one of the farms which was completed in 2018 as a facility to meet the needs of the farm workers and their families.
Merwida not only cares about its people, but the surrounding environment too. The Winery is a Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI) Champion and is currently aiding in the conservation of 600 hectares of endangered Papenkuils Wetland. The Papenkuils Wetland is home to five red-listed plant species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Apart from Fairtrade and BWI Champion (Biodiversity and Wine Initiative) are Merwida also WIETA (The Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trading Association) and IPW (Integrated Production of Wine) certified.
Merwida is a member of AWARE whose aim is to reduce alcohol related harm by creating awareness and performing ongoing research, providing effective collaboration with our partners, and implementing strong stakeholder management.
