The Breedekloof Makers is the result of a journey that began in 2014 with a group of like-minded winemakers who committed themselves to emphasize the quality of Chenin Blanc made in the Breedekloof Valley. They set out to make terroir driven, small batch wines. Chenin Blanc is the workhorse of the Breedekloof and is planted widely over a variety of terroir pockets. This made the task an easy one.
A general, unique feature of this area is the slower ripening that the grapes undergo due to the region being closed off by the various mountain ranges. This allows the cooler night air to be trapped. The longer hang time on the vines allow for these grapes to gain an extra dimension and tangible complexity, allowing for superb expression. The diversity in terroir is matched by the various approaches the winemakers used in the cellar. The winemakers are encouraged to express themselves.
The name Breedekloof Makers was developed to underline the fact that while the current focus is on Chenin Blanc, the movement is inclusive and open to any of the region’s winemakers who want to think out of the box and try something different. The aim is not about the individuals running with it, but about creating an awareness of Breedekloof Wine Region in its entirety to the benefit of every single grape farmer, winemakers, vineyard worker and resident of the valley.
The Family Vintners Chenin Blanc is Lieza van der Merwe’s wine that forms part of the Breedekloof Makers. “ Wine has always played such an important part in my life, from driving the “parsmasjien” with my dad as a child to exploring the international wine world as an intern and now finally getting to call Merwida my home as a winemaker.“ Lieza honours her late great-grandfather, who was the Founder of the Cellar, Oupa Pierre van der Merwe by adding his face on the label of the bottle. He is the 3rd generation and grandfather of current owners Schalk and Pierre.
